2003-10-30 | THE RETURN OF COUNT CRUNKULA
My two cents on this very important issue is long overdue and is inspired by fell behind's last entry. For all of you that were Conan O'Brien fans from day one,(not the one's who claim to have been there since day one but are only 16 years old, or the one's who say they love Conan but only watch him once every 2 years) you are well aware of the revolutionary things that Conan and his staff have come up with which have been often imitated, but who's brilliance have never been duplicated. One of my favorite memories of early O'Briens, was the regular mention of a new word in the slang of cool kids in America who really "got it", and there seemed to be very few back then. The new word was created for Late Night With Conan O'Brien, and that word was Crunk/Krunk. The word had no true meaning, but had massive impact for the few of us who were around for its birth. It could be used as a term of endearment for a favorite thing or person. It could be used as an exclamation. It worked for so many different situations. As frequent Conan visitor Ice-T exhibited ever so eloquently, Crunk was also perfect for sentences that were loaded with profanity. You could get your point across, and get the crunk off your chest without offending all the crunking idiots who don't get it. Anyway, Conan used to joke that the word Crunk would take the nation by storm, but eventually the word disappeared from the lips of our fearless and favorite host. Much to my chagrin, years later Conans joke turned into a sudden premonition as the word started to spill out of the mouth of rappers. Some good some awful, all unoriginal, and non prop-giving to Conan. (which would've made the transition much more appealing, smooth, and enjoyable) But no. They made it their own, and never thanked Conan for "donating" what they rightfully stole from his genius mind. Those bastards!!! Anyway, lately the term has been used mostly in association with parties and clubs, and other un-Conan type subjects. One that sticks out is Outkasts use of it on their classic album Aquemini. "We da type of niggaz make the club get crunk". That seems to be the most popular type of context lately. In other words they make the crowd get rowdy, crazy....they make it go off. It's off the hook. Off the heezie for sheezie. Whatever all that stuff means. It doesn't matter what all these wannabes think it means. The original spirit of the word Crunk/Krunk, was to use it in the context that means the most to you personally. Or just use it freely. If it feels right, say it. Don't be a crunky.
