2003-01-30 | TALKING IS FOR CLOSERS

The new chic thing for emo backpackers and other uninformed people to do is talk about how we shouldn't go to war, and to talk about all the issues (incorrectly).

I myself, don't get involved too much, because I'm not informed enough to be able to speak about it at length, or as intelligently as I would like to speak about it, so for the most part I shut my mouth.

But when people that know even less then me, or ones that have no common sense start rapping about it, then I've got to step in and put them on mute, as well.

It started off with some diary on diary land, by some dude who's profile and other diary entries contradicted any political stance he might have.

In other words, he shouldn't have had one.

Usually, I take information from all sides, and I can tell by the way people get their points across, the manner in which they deliver, the emotion in their voices, and unbiased response, whether or not they know what the hell they're talking about, and I base my own opinion taking bits and peices, and using my common sense to decipher what is plausible, and what is garbage.

But I still don't hold nightly press conferences from my ivory tower.

I simply reply to what other people say.

It's so fun to agree.

It's fun to disagree too, but I wish everyone was right, because it's so nice to say "wow, he nailed that one!", when someone gives their simple opinion on heavy matters.

Disagreeing all the time is too high maintenance for me.

Regular readers of my diary, might laugh out loud at this, because I'm always disagreeing about things on here, and complaining about matters big and small, but I do it out of necessity.

I don't do it just so I can look cool.

I wish I could agree with everybody, but the simple fact is that most people just love to hear themselves talk, and forget to think about what they're going to say beforehand.

I take it that some of these people must watch the news sometimes, because if they don't then they should really shut the fuck up.

But I can watch one show per week, and I feel like I haven't lost a beat.

I watched Hardball tonight, and although I didn't know every issue ahead of time, I never once sat there thinking to myself, "boy am I out of touch..."

That's what I miss about Politically Incorrect.

That was a way for me to stay informed, and to enjoy it more, because the truths as I knew them were spoken on that show by people who I considered to be my equals.

For a show like P.I. not to be on during times like these is a crime.

The second thing that started me on this, was watching the consistent, increasingly annoying attitude of Maggie Guyllenhaal at the Sundance Awards.

Not only is she starting to look more and more like a pretentious asshole every time I see her, but she decided to close the show by telling everybody in attendance that "while the cameras are on, I just want to say that we should avoid war at all costs."

Of course all the cool hollywood people stood up and applauded loudly, while the other half of the crowd clapped awkwardly.

I have no problem with people taking that stance.

I'm not even sure where I stand on the whole situation.

Like I said, I don't know all the facts. I don't know if anybody who's not on the presidential cabinet does, for that matter. I always wonder how much we don't know, and that we'll never know.

But I don't need a Hollywood starlet telling me what she thinks, and especially not at a movie awards show.

It's so easy to say that you oppose the war, and apparently very cool right now.

But I think most people that talk about it, don't really know all the facts, and that bothers me.

What does Maggie know that I don't?

Did her work on Secretary prep her for her joint career as political journalist?

I used to love this girl about a year ago, but I think she takes herself somewhat too seriously, and maybe the world as well.

Someone in her position should be enjoying her life as much as she can right now.

I guess it started when she went on the Tonight Show and seemed to have a kind of "who give's a shit" attitude, which is played out like Kelly Osbourne.

If you're going to go on the show at all, don't be a rats ass. If you think that going on these talk shows is below you, then maybe you should find yourself a new agent.

The only reason I'm giving you any benefit of the doubt presently, is because of your affiliation with brother Jake.

Then she went on Conan, and first of all, acted like she had never seen him before, which is a major felony in my book. Then she gave him stupid looks when he was making his usual jokes, in his usual delivery.

Of course she was giving him some Beck Hansen to Wayne Coyne on Austin City Limits "grow-up" looks. ( RYAN knows what I mean)

You just don't do that to Conan. It's not done. He deserves respect by all people. Especially people who are more akin to him, like M.G. is supposed to be.

Anyway, like usual I'm rambling, and I'll take the lack of response to mean that you're all pretending that you don't know what I'm talking about, even though if you tried, I'm pretty sure that you would know that I know exactly what I'm saying, and what I mean.

Just please...take the advice that Pacino gave to Spacey in Glengarry Glen Ross: "You don't say shit until you know".

And if you're going to disagree, then do it like me. Only do it when other people are talking out of their asses like Jim Carrey but saying nada.

I don't disagree with Chris Matthews a lot.

But if Chris Carabba started talking about world relations then I would give him a wedgie with his all to visible boxer shorts, while he was getting his emo pompadour waxed.
