2003-01-09 | WE CAN MAKE SANDWICHES
Great recent cameos: "Hightower" from the Police Academy movies on Seinfeld as, of all things, a police officer Fred Stoller, lanky stand-up comedian, on Seinfeld, as a friend of Jerry's who remembers everything in detail, except for anything having to do with Elaine David Chappelle as a preacher, doing the intro for the Talib Kweli album Quality Michael Rappaport as himself, talking at the end of a couple tracks on the Kweli album Peter Stormare, best known to me as Steve Buscemis partner in Fargo on Seinfeld as Costanzas hired help There's this new Subway commercial starring teenagers, talking about how rad sandwiches are. When the commercial first comes on, they make the point of telling you on the bottom of the screen, that this ad was "filmed by and starring teenagers only". That may very well be, but that doesn't mean that the commercial is any more real. In fact it comes off as even more artificial then most ads out there. It looks like one of those fake SNL commercials where they show teenagers going batty over Preperation H. They show the teens doing rad teen stuff like hanging upside down, and spinning around in circles. At one point, a teen boy enthusiastically tells you (i'm sure just off the top of his head) that there are 6 sandwiches with 7 grams of fat or less (,bro!) Speaking of fake commercials, a year or so ago I heard that Campbells didn't think their "NFL moms" campaign was realistic enough, especially since all the "moms" were actually actresses. So they announced (to whom, i don't know) that they were going to start using the players actual mothers from now on. So the new commercials have been airing since the start of the NFL season, but the commercials are still horrible, and possibly even more horrible now, because they have the actual mothers, but the ads are still fake. I just don't get it. If you want to make it reality, then just make it reality. If you want to make a fake commercial, then get some good actors, and some good writers, and make a good fake commercial. It's so annoying. Do they think we're idiots? I want to punch "Luis" from those ads in the mouth, by the way. The guy from the Subway. He's a sellout. He should be doing something more worthwhile. I'm sure he's a big hit in the family. The guy who pretends he's meeting Michael Strahan and his mom, and pretends to be loving the Campbells chunky soup that he's eating, even though it's his 30th bowl of the day. Not like they have to edit those things. If they had to edit them, you'd think they'd just call for a "re-do". "don't get me started on a rant"
