2002-12-02 | "people who died"

My great grandfather died a week before last Friday. He was actually my great grandmothers (on my mothers side) 3rd or 4th husband, but he was the only great grandfather I have ever known, so he was a pretty important person in my life.

I wasn't too sad or anything, because he lived a long life, and he would've been living in a nursing home for the rest of his life, and he did not want that. I mean it's a loss....but I guess I was expecting it, eventually. I was a little surprised at how fast it happened.

He was one of the greatest men I have ever known. I told him that before I left Hawaii, but I don't know if he knew what I was talking about at the time. I never saw the man get even a little upset, let alone lose his temper. He was always calm, and soft spoken.

My mom had kind of a hard time with it, because she had been taking care of him a lot these past few months, and because she's still not fully over the death of my dad. (step-father, technically, but in all intents and purposes, my father, and probably the best man I have ever known.)

Ironically, they both died on the same day of the month. (22nd)

I hope my mom didn't notice that. It would be even more of a reminder.

My dad has been gone for almost 3 years now, and my mom is still having a hard time with it. I worry about her sometimes. I think she wants to love again, though. I think she's ready to re-marry if she finds the right man.

Anyway, I found the obituaries of "Grandpa John" and Dad on line:

JOHN CHARLES SHELHOUSE, 86, of Honolulu, died Nov. 22, 2002. Born in Hamilton, Ohio. Survived by sister, Kathryn Nugent; stepsons, Ed Gomes and Obed Wilson; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren. Private family service. Arrangements by Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary.

Lynn D. Johnson, 50, of Kailua, a retired sales manager from American Restaurant Supply, died Aug. 22. Born in Boise, Idaho, he is survived by wife Joan; father Preston; stepmother Fleurette; brother Wayne; stepbrother Michel Vinet; children Todd Johnson, Desiree "Kanani" Tai and Jonathan "Kawika" Medina; and three grandchildren. Private services. Donations suggested to the American Cancer Society.
