2002-07-13 | NAZI PUNKS FUCK OFF!
I saw the interesting, somewhat disturbing, and great film "Believer" last night. It's about this Jewish kid who becomes a Nazi. Throughout the movie he is struggling with his beliefs, and trying to separate the things he despises about the Jewish people, and the certain facets of it that he admires, and holds on to, despite his intensely severe hatred he has for Jews in general. It's basically a sad, but true monologue on how sad hatred can be. It's amazing how intelligent someone can be on one hand, and then be so fucking ignorant on the other. And don't get me wrong, there are SOME good points behind his beliefs, and hatred, but it's the thin line between disagreement and disgust, that he seems to not be able to find. He understands both sides so completely, but he decides to use all of his aggression to fulfill his distaste against his former faith, instead of trying to find the inconsistencies within himself. It's a tragic, and pointless struggle. I didn't take much of this home with me. Just the part of it being an excellent film. But I can imagine a number of people listening to someone as intelligent and attractive, and commanding as the lead character and being influenced. (not within the context of the movie, but if they had met him in person.) I just can't imagine hatred at that level. I can relate to it only on smaller scales. I can relate to the anti-religion asthetic. I can't stand religion as a corporation, and the majority of the people they have associated within this giant conglamerate of contradiction. But there are so many interesting, nice, and trustworthy people who are religious. So I can listen to someone who has a different point of view, whether I agree or not. I could never imagine getting even close to the point of the character of this movie. I would never be that adamant about it. I could listen to his point of view, but at the end of the day, he leaves me feeling just as uncomfortable as someone who's trying to sell me religion. And more so when he's wearing a t-shirt with a swastika on it, and talking about killing a jew. Anyway, I'm rambling, and probably not making a point, but it's just an interesting perspective not tackled in most films. In fact in most films, especially the big budget ones, topics like this are left wide open with a clear path to the end zone. So go see this movie!! Open your mind up. OH YEAH......and Summer Phoenix is hot!! what better reason to see it then that?
