2002-03-15 | THE KINDER, GENTLER, ENTRY.

Ok. So often times when i'm bored, and i'm on line, i search for people on diaryland with similar interests as me. People who like the same movies, or bands, etc. I'm not too keen on all the cool authors. Ain't much into the book-readin'.

Alot of times I look for people who like Chokebore, because there's not alot of people, especially here in the good ol' u.s. of a., who even know who Chokebore is.

I met one guy who is a Chokebore fan, and found out he owns a record label. He's a really cool guy. (http://www.biglizard.diaryland.com)

He was telling me one night about this band that he really likes named BOILERMAKER. I tried looking around for it, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I guess their stuff is pretty much out of print. So he said he would burn me a couple of their cds, and mail them to me. I was gracious.

So I get home one day, and there's this huge package there. I open it up, and to my amazement, there's like 20 cds in there, and stickers, and t-shirts, and all kinds of good shit. It was like Christmas all over again. Actually it was better then last Christmas. I only got like boxer shorts and socks for last Christmas, and I had to work the next day at like 7 in the morning. What a guy he is. I was pleasantly surprised. I thank him again. Now some reviews for him, since I haven't been able to catch him on line lately.

DERITA SISTERS-"Whore Stories" Pretty much what I was expecting. Silly, energetic, fun, fast punk songs, with a warped sense of humor. I'm a big fan of Guttermouth, so I usually like stuff like this. Some of the songs are ridiculous, but I don't think they were going for "genius". The songs don't go on long, so there's not much to complain about. I liked the sample at the beginning from that movie with Norm Macdonald, and Artie Lange, and Chris Farley (i think that's the movie, i haven't seen it).

Dead Lazlos Place-"_______ (i forget): live at CBGB's" Again pretty much what I expected. L.A. underground punk stylings. I enjoy this kind of music, for the most part. There's usually certain times when I enjoy it more then others, but this album is very consistent, and entertaining. It's funny. The guys voice, I guess the singer, when he talks in between songs, is kind of comical. He sounds like some crazy radio d.j. from boston or something, giving away tickets to a metal concert. Then he starts singing, and it's fun, straight forward, easy to listen to punk. I don't know how to explain this kind of punk, but I could definitely tell you if I could remember the other bands who are in this same category. Most of them are underground california punk rockers. I think what Ryan wanted me to listen for on here was a cover of "Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks. I couldn't hear the lyrics that well on this song, and I don't listen to Garth much, so I wasn't sure. But I think that's what it was. I enjoyed that song alot.

Aqua Velvets-"Radio Waves" Awesome choice to send me. I was glad to receive this, because I don't have any other cd's in my collection like this, although I do enjoy instrumental/surf music from time to time. There's certain moods I have when I love this kind of shit, and I now I have something to fulfill the void. This is great to listen to while driving to and from work. Or just driving in general. I liked it alot. I was familiar with alot of these songs before, but didn't know alot of their titles. I really enjoyed the sounds on this cd. I should listen to this next time I'm trying to write a screenplay. It places really interesting images, and scenes in your mind.

Now the big one:

BOILERMAKER-"Boilermaker"/"Watercourse" I really, really, really enjoyed the Boilermaker. Truly. It's magnificent. Not as good as Chokebore, but definitely in the same class. They're definitely in my top 5 of bands I've found out about recently. I think they could become an all-time favorite. They're already on their way up the charts. I enjoyed the self-titled album (and i'm assuming their first), more then Watercourse, as a whole, but the last third of Watercourse was excellent. I was really trapped in the music at the end of that album. It's really hard for me to say what they sound like. I thought it would be interesting to compare what we each thought they were comparable to, but I couldn't think of anybody. There's actually a couple bands that they remind me of, I'm almost sure of it, but I can't think of them. The first album was more of a stumper. You may disagree, but on a couple songs from Watercourse, they almost sound like a mix between the mighty Chokebore, and the also mighty Built to Spill. Call me kerrazy, but I really heard that on at least 2 or 3 songs. But they have a really unique sound on most of the songs. I really love it so far. Haven't heard the other 2 albums yet. Another thought I had on a couple of other songs from Watercourse was "a slightly harder Built to Spill, with a less twangy voice then Doug". I don't know. It's just good music. I look forward to finding out more about this band, and listening to the other 2 albums. It's a damn shame that they are defunct. I have already added them to my profiles list of favorite bands.

FFI-"Apples and Oranges" Very impressive. They sound like a very tight, consistent band. I enjoyed this album. It was very smooth. It was easy to listen to. It was very un-pretentious. I enjoyed the lyrics, and music for the most part. They are good. They sound like they have the potential to be great. Like really great. But what do I know. They're having fun, and doing a good job at it.
