Mad props goes out to one of my longtime favorite actors, Mr. John C. Reilly. He was on Jimmy Kimmel tonight, and at the end of this interview he told everybody to look to their hearts and vote for the right man in November, and proceeded to open up his jacket and display a heart written over the left side of his shirt with "John Kerry" written inside of it. That was precious. It reminded me that I've been meaning to say something for a long time. The reason I haven't been saying it is because I want to make sure I say it as perfectly as I can, and another reason is that no one is going to read it or respond to it anyway, but fuck it, here I go.
It seems over the last month or so that there has been a defeatist attitude about the upcoming election. People keep talking like Kerry has already lost the race. And they keep talking about how boring he is. Numerous hosts, for or against Kerry, have basically been recycling the same lame ass lines, and most of it doesn't really seem to be true to me in the least. I don't find Kerry to be that boring at all. He's definitely a very chill individual. He's not that fiery, but I like that sometimes. I'm sure when the situation calls for it he will show you some fire. As for now, we need someone with a level head, to help us get our shit together. A calming yet focused influence. I remember watching him on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and getting truly excited. But the next day all I heard about was how boring he was again. I actually thought he was a very engaging guest, and was lighthearted and open-minded. Even one of my favorite people in the world, Mr. Conan O'Brien, seems to be nightly making fun of how technical and unexciting he is. People like Conan need to start going the other way with their comedy, and using the funny to help change people's minds, because unfortunately, there are a lot of robots out there who need all the advice they can get, from the most diverse of sources to make a selection, because they're clueless as to what the right thing to do is, and will take this defeatist attitude and either decide to not vote, or possibly even change their mind and vote for the non-boring dude. It sounds stupid to talk about Conan affecting the election, but it's not just him. People look to so many different avenues, that if the deck gets stacked all on one side, the people will be more likely to be intimidated, or join the naysayers and just give up. It's time for people to stop being politically correct. The time for jokes is over (except for the Bush ones, of course), and it's time for people to speak their mind. If people like me and Conan want change, we need to speak up and try and do something about it. Even if we can't change things ourselves, we can't just sit around and not try.
I remember being so inspired by Kerry and Edwards after their speech that followed the conclusion of the Republican National Convention, but all I remember the sometimes disgustingly ignorant media focusing on was how powerful the Republican Convention was. I was astounded. John Edwards had given one of the most emotionally inspiring political pep talks I'd seen in years, and as a reward we got to see clips of Bush all night, struggling to read his teleprompter.
It just sucks, because there's so many people out there who are as fed up as me, but a lot of the places I see these people are on the underground side of things, and I'm not sure if the mainstream media is consciously ignoring some of these people, because it seems like semi-famous people are speaking their minds in smaller arenas, and I don't buy into the conspiracy about the mainstream media closing it's ears to any controversy. I mean I know it happens in small doses, but I don't think it's a constant evil thing going on. I think that even a lot of network suits are down with change, but I think a lot of them maybe don't feel it's necessary, because life for them may not have changed that much since the last election. It must be hard to be very well off and want things to change. But it's harder to not have compassion for people, and not see all that has gone wrong in the last 4 years. And still yet even more harder to stand by and let it continue. So don't. Fuck it. Let's try a little change. I believe it will be a beautiful thing. It's exciting to think about somebody new in the White House. Refreshing. I don't think Bush being in there will be completely catastrophic, but it will be mighty depressing for a few months or years. Eventually we'll get used to having senor Jackass there, and go on with our lives, but in the back of our minds we'll be wishing we had done something. Do you want to be stuck with that feeling for that long? Me neither. Lets rock the motherfucking vote, bitches. Once and for all. Rage Against the Evil Empire.
