2002-09-27 | SONGS FOR THE TRAIL OF DEAF

For the last few weeks, since I've been off of work, I've been trying to pitch in a little, and take care of my ailing great grandfather who has prostate cancer which has spread to his lungs.

I don't know what to do when I'm there. He's still pretty independent. He's incontenent, but when I'm there he seems to be pretty under control.

Also, when I'm there, he's super aware, and energetic, and independent. I hardly help him. I just do little things like help him pull his pants up when he changes his clothes, because his legs are really swollen, and hard to lift sometimes. I also get his breakfast and lunch, and snacks, and beverages.

BAsically I just ask him alot of questions like "are you ok?", and "can I get you anything?"....or "are you hungry yet?"...

most of the time his answers are no, but every once in awhile he gets a craving for something. Usually Vanilla Ice Cream or Soda Crackers.

Taking care of him is pretty easy. I just lay down on the couch all day watching tv.

This is seriously what I watch when I'm taking care of him. Hell, this is what I watch when I'm NOT taking care of him. I'm not one of these people who says "I just watch these shows because nothings on". No, no..I actually love these shows. They're so peaceful. I love morning tv. So this is seriously my unedited list of what I watch during the day. Laugh if you want. I'm not ashamed:

7:00am-8:00am: Today Show/Eyelids

8:00am-9:00am: Live with Regis and Kelly

9:00am-10:00am: Wayne Brady

10:00am-11:00am: The Price is Right

11:00am-11:30am: not much on at this time...and i only have mtv2 at my house, not at grandpas

11:30am-12:00pm: Pardon the InterruP.T.I.on

12:00pm-12:30pm: Sam Choys Kitchen (a local cooking show)

12:30p-1:00p: The new PYRAMID starring Donny Osmond

1:00p-2:00p: back to back episodes of DATING STORY (one of my favorites of any time of day)

2:00p-3:00p: Emeril Live

3:00p-4:00p: Dr. Phil (i used to hate this guy when he was on Oprah, but now I can't get enough of him. i can't explain it. i won't try)

4:00p-5:00p: Yesterdays Conan...even though i've usually seen 'em the night before.

I probably won't be taking care of him anymore, because I'm leaving the island next Friday.

In the next week I have to donate my non-working car to the American Lung Association (my idea, since my dad died from lung cancer), sell my DVD player (i'll get a new one when i get a new job in Arizona), sell a bunch of CD's, buy some cd holders, so I can send my cases seperately. (They take up too much space, and always get smashed when I travel from state to state)

The night i get to California (my first stop before settling in Tucson) QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE & .....AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD are playing at the Hollywood Paladium and I was supposed to go, but now i'm scared because the show supposedly starts at 6:30, and I don't get to the airport until 8:00.

But if it's anything like Hawaii, the show starts way later then it's supposed to, and the headling acts take forever to come on stage.....

Enlighten me people....
