2001-09-09 | THE DAILY 'BYRNE'

This Diary entry is brought to you by the letter 47x.h9

I always hear people complaining about how much tv sucks now days, and how nothing is ever on. That always shocks me, because I can never find enough time to watch all the shows you love. If you take the time to look, and get some by-god digital cable, you should have a never-ending supply of excellent programming waiting to be viewed. There are so many things to watch... An easy one is MTV2...you could watch that almost the whole day and not get annoyed. One of the movie channels usually has something on...it helps when you have like ten movie channels. There's so much good stuff on basic cable, though, that i hardly ever watch movies.

One of my new favorite things to watch is called "Adult Swim", on the Cartoon Network. This is on Sunday nights where they show cartoons that cater to adult audiences more then kids. This goes on for 3 or 4 hours with what i consider to be revolutionary cartoon-work. The first show that i usually catch on it that i really enjoy is entitled "Home Movies". I was watching it tonight and wondering who the familiar voice i heard was, and i should've known....it was Jonathan Katz of the legendary, and personal favorite "Dr. Katz" show from Comedy Central. This show is great...I think Katz was just a guest star, but the show in general was awesome. Cool squiggly animation, great dialogue...just fantastic. We owe that to the genius Tom Snyder i suppose who is behind this show as well. (not the Tom Snyder with the insane eyebrows who used to have a show after Letterman)

Next came the Brak show. Those who have seen the legendary Space Ghost Coast to Coast, which was already a favorite of mine, are already familiar with Brak. The Brak show is the most insane sitcom you will ever see. I haven't laughed to the point of crying like that since Scary Movie 2, or the really funny parts from Freddie Got Fingered. I was literally in tears tonight. Zorak lost his scratchy voice and acquired a sexy, perfect one, and hated it. You need to see this show if insane cartoons do it for you.

I also watched the old faithful, Space Ghost C2C. Although it was a repeat, I watched most of it again. It guest-starred Dave Thomas (of SCTV, not Wendy's) on the first one, and David Byrne, and Donnie Osmond on the second one. I love to watch these celebrities squirm and then laugh later, as if they weren't uptight and ready to walk off earlier. Dave Thomas was a pretty good sport, and decent at ad-lib as usual. David Byrne was just crazy as usual...I always wonder if he's like that in person. At first he was semi-in to it but drifting off at times. He made some pretty funny jokes, though. He looks confused, bewildered, even pissed at times. Space Ghost kept asking him if he liked croutons, and Byrne said that he wasn't a crouton man, but that he could eat them on the side. He said "you can have my croutons and baco's on the side, and i'll eat them later or something." And later when Zorak and "Tad" drifted off talking to each other and byrne was ready to leave he would blurt out funny lines to himself like "i believe it was moses who created the ten 'condiments'." He also later said that they build up salads to make them look full, almost like styrofoam as packing material. Donnie Osmond was being a bitch. He was laid back and funny for about an eighth of the interview and the rest of it he was in total shock and disgust. Spacey shocked him even more by ending the interview by asking Donnie "where do you go when you die?", to which the dazed donnie didn't answer... After a couple awkward seconds Space and Zorak yelled the answer: "FIRE DRILL!!!"..and the sound of a wailing fire drill filled the closing credits. Sheer genius.

Other recent tv notes.....

I love Reverb on HBO, although tonights sucked. It was Bush and Staind...and i think it was staind from like a couple years ago, before all their cool hit songs. Last weeks was much better, featuring Built to Spill, Pavement, and the Delusionals. I've also seen Beck, Sebadoh, Cornelius, Moby, Tibetan Freedom Concert, Roots, and some other great people on there.

The Video Music Awards sucked, basically, except for a few usual highlights, and the usual Ben Stiller appearance is always refreshing. Another cool thing was the appearance of Mudvayne. Although alot of people hate the new metal regime, and Mudvayne only has a couple decent songs, it's so great to see a band like that at the commercial VMA's. It's like seeing Fugazi open up for Queen. It just turns the whole show upside down, and makes people uncomfortable...i love that. Mudvayne also took home the first ever MTV2 award. That was great. For those who didn't see it, each member of Mudvayne put makeup on their heads to make themselves look like they had been shot in their foreheads. It was great to see them in the audience after seeing puffy, and the normal cottonpickin' kids.

Tonight I watched Bug Juice on the Disney Channel, because my girlfriend used to work for that camp. Actually she used to work for 'Jesse Camp'..sorry bad joke. Anyway my girlfriend used to be a camp counselor there at that New Mexico camp whatever it's called. I find that show interesting in a totally annoying way. Can somebody tell me what the hell Zoog means? I have no idea what that word is all about. everything on Disney now has the word Zoog in front of it. I don't get it. I just shake my head.

For those who find this sort of thing interesting, (not you, Stephanie) I saw a brand-spankin new Mr. Softee Ice Cream Truck a couple weeks ago. I don't think it was in business.. I just think it was for show. It had an awesome paint job...so vivid.

And last but not least I saw a video on MTV! Regular MTV! An actual video. and it was a weird one...it was a brand new Elton John video (he still makes videos? I know..) starring Robert Downey Jr. walking around a house doing weird gestures. Strange. I enjoyed it though. It was like a weird short film that you'd see on IFC or Sundance....anyway...adios
