My grrlfriend is a riot grrl and she doesn't even know it. She's a punk rock girl. A cool girl. A one in a million girl.

And she doesn't know any of it.

And it makes her even more punk rawk, because she doesn't act like she doesn't know. She truly has no idea. She doesn't have to pretend to be anything. She's just herself, but she doesn't understand how cool herself is. And herself is pretty rad if you ask me. And I know these things. Because I have good taste.

She has the greatest taste, but she thinks she doesn't. Or she doesn't think at all. She just does stuff. She doesn't think about the consequences or the popularity of the outcome. She just tells it like it is, and most of the time it is correct. And cool. And you wish you had said it first. But then it wouldn't be as cool, because it wouldn't have been natural. You would've been trying to steal her thunder. And you'd get electrocuted.

She thinks she isn't hip, but she always picks up things right away. Even if I discovered it first, she reaffirms my vision by saying that it's cool, and it makes me feel more cool in the process, and it makes me feel honored that she approves of my taste.

I'm the aspiring musician, but she's the one with the true punk rock soul. She doesn't try to be punk. She doesn't dress like a punk, she doesn't talk like a punk, she doesn't even listen to much punk. But she's got that D.I.Y. attitude, and she doesn't agree with anything unless she actually believes it. And she doesn't do it because she thinks it's noble. She just doesn't know any better.

I feel guilty about watching or listening to or doing things that she doesn't really like, and not because I think it's stupid, but I wish she thought it was a little cooler, because I think I'm cool, but I'll never be as cool as her. And it's true.

But she would never tell you that.

That's what makes her so cool.
