2004-10-20 | DAMON IS MY HOMEBOY
I'm sorry, Juawana, but I didn't see Tom Jones tonight, and I'm about to explain to you why.
First of all, I wasn't feeling very well. I got sick on the plane, like I always do when flying, and todays nausea seemed to last longer than usual. And for some reason my left arm was in semi-severe pain for the majority of the day. I don't know what happened, but the mother fucker was hurtin' like Tim Burton. Second of all, on any other night, Tom Jones would've been a good choice, but tonight was a rare occasion. Tonight baseball was the more important thing. Tonight baseball was the only thing. Tonight wasn't about being a Red Sox fan or a Yankee fan, because neither of them are my favorite teams, although I was rooting for the Red Sox in this series. Especially after being down 3-0. vs. My independent spirit makes it necessary for me to root for someone with insurmountable odds against them. Unless, of course, they're playing my favorite teams. Tonight was about being a baseball fan. A fan of sports in general. It made it all worth while. All the "useless" games that people make fun of me for watching during the regular season, make it all worthwhile. It's such a huge payoff as a die hard sports fan to get an ending like this. I do believe in miracles, when it comes to sports. We saw history tonight. You could feel the magic in the air. You could smell the beauty. You could see it in the eyes of every Red Sox staffer and fan. It just makes you feel good as a person, not even as a sports fan, to see that if you stick with something, good things can actually happen from time to time. Things like that happen to me all the time. Just when you think things couldn't get much worse, something happens to turn things around. You just have to be patient. Things do work themselves out if you give them a chance. You have to believe in something, or else life just isn't that fun. Even if they don't win the World Series, what the Red Sox did tonight was truly special. It's not a small victory. I want them to win the World Series, too, but all is not lost if they do lose. I really believe they will win it all, though. They are so powerful right now. They're walking on air. They have the unique combination of feeling indestructible and feeling like they have nothing to lose simultaneously. I think it's a dangerous combo for the Astros or Cardinals to deal with. I do hope the Astros are the one's that have to deal with it. I wouldn't mind if the Astros won it all, and I would actually like it a lot, but it seems like all would be right in the world (well, more things would be right) if the Red Sox won the big one. It gives us hope in a time when we need it. The whole Boston-New England Patriots-John Kerry connection is very intriguing and slightly eerie to think about. What if they all win? It makes you think. I would trade a Kerry victory for the Red Sox getting swept any day of the week, though. for Let's believe in something. Let's have some hope. Let's carry it on to other parts of our lives. Let's carry it into November, and into the voting booth. Let's carry it into the White House. And then maybe we can start believing in ourselves a little more again, too, and witness the power we can have if we actually give a shit. And if Bush does win, let's use it to help us forget, and to continue to try and overcome.
